Salute Sees Silver

The designation of the twenty-fifth
anniversary as the “silver anniversary”
has been traced back to medieval
Europe, when wives were given gifts
of silver wreaths to commemorate
25 years of marriage. Even then,
when women didn’t have many
rights, they were recognized for
their commitment and contributions
to their relationships. Through the
Salute to Women of Achievement, the
YWCA of Greater Atlanta is borrowing
this tradition to honor modern-day
women who demonstrate excellence
and unwavering commitment to
their businesses, to their surrounding
communities and to the mission of
the YWCA to eliminate racism and
empower women.
This year marks the silver anniversary
of the YWCA of Greater Atlanta’s Saluteto Women of Achievement – 25 years of paying annual homage to a select group
of women who have made significant strides in business and philanthropy,
and serve as proud examples to others of what is possible through power,
passion and preparedness. In a city known for events that celebrate and inspire
generosity and support of charitable organizations, the Salute to Women of
Achievement has created its own individual stamp.
When it began 25 years ago, Salute was the first event of its kind in Atlanta – one
that was created by a women-based organization to celebrate the professional
and civic achievements of distinct Atlanta women and inspire even more. At
each event in the past, we have saluted 10 phenomenal women, and paid
tribute to one woman in particular who was named “Woman of Achievement”
for the given year.
Past Women of Achievement have included: Judge Leah Ward Sears (2007),
Stephanie Blank (2006), Evern Cooper Epps (2005), Charlayne Hunter-Gault
(2004), Dorothy Fuqua (2003), Mayor Shirley Franklin (2002), Jane Fonda
(2001), Judge Glenda Hatchett (2000), Carol A. Jackson (1999), Ingrid Saunders
Jones (1998), Judy M. Anderson (1997), Shirley Clarke Jackson (1996), Beverly
Bailey Harvard (1995), Myrtle R. Davis (1994), Jean Childs Young (1993), Monica
Pearson (1992), Mary Gellerstedt (1991), Johnnetta B. Cole (1990), Marie Walters
Dodd (1989), Sally Jessy Raphael (1988), Gladys Knight (1987), Coretta Scott
King (1986), Anne Cox Chambers (1985) and Rosalynn Carter (1984).
