EncorePlus
Giving women hope
The YWCA of Greater Atlanta's EncorePlus breast and cervical cancer awareness program has been in existence for over ten years. The program emphasizes early detection and facilitates breast and cervical cancer education for employees, churches, and community groups. Uninsured women between the ages of 40 and 64 who are in need of a breast or cervical screening are referred for mammograms, clinical breast exams, and pap tests at no charge, along with transportation to and from visits and other supportive services per need. EncorePlus also has a youth component called It’s Never Too Early,
which offers breast cancer awareness for high school females.
The YWCA of Greater Atlanta EncorePlus program facilitates on average 35 early detection breast cancer awareness programs annually. Women from the teen years through seniors are educated on what is breast cancer, risk factors of breast cancer, lowering risk their factors, and screening recommendations. Utilizing the promotora approach, trained community health advocates not only educate, but outreach to uninsured and low income women to get them referred for free mammograms. ENCOREplus is run by women for women, enriched by the YWCA's long tradition of supporting women in every aspect of their lives.
If you would like to schedule an early detection breast cancer awareness workshop, call Thomasine Leachman at 404 835-1632.

A comment by Sharon Stuart...
I was 46 years old and had never had a mammogram. Being a single mother for a lot of years, and not having insurance, I could never afford to get a mammogram. The EncorePlus program was at Walmart on a Saturday providing breast cancer information to customers. Not only was I given valuable information on that day, I was also contacted that following Monday by the EncorePlus office who coordinated an appointment with Westend Medical for me to get my first mammogram at no charge.
and Carmen Lyte says...
I am 35 years old and was diagnosed with breast cancer.
As I feared the devastating journey of having to go through my treatment process, I also dreaded the thought of losing my hair from it. I knew I had to do something about it soon before all of my hair fell out. I contacted the EncorePlus office with my dilemma. They immediately contacted a wig shop for me to go and select a brand new wig. Keeping up with my appearance during this emotionally difficult time has really helped to make this journey easier. Thank you, EncorePlus!
Gwen Evans
Hello, my name is Gwen Evans and I was able to receive my very first mammogram through the YWCA EncorePlus program. My husband and I have been self employed since the late 90’s and it has been impossible to purchase insurance along with the cost of trying to run our business. It worried me to no end that I had not yet got a mammogram for two reasons; one……I was 40 years old and, two……I do have a family history of breast cancer.
My prayers were answered when I attended a YWCA EncorePlus educational program. This is when I learned women all over the United States who can not afford a mammogram, can get one at no cost. EncorePlus promptly made me an appointment with West End Medical Center for a clinical exam and screening mammogram. Without this life saving service through EncorePlus, it could have been a long time before I was in a position to pay for a mammogram. I’m happy to say my mammogram results were negative.
